There are a few points throughout the late summer months where the moon feels like you could reach up and touch it. There’s a whole science and math to the distance and viewing angle and all that stuff but I’ll save that breakdown for someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
Having the proper gear to document how close the moon looks is also key. This is gear that I don’t have. So, for me, I try to capture how this sight makes me feel. The glow of the moonlight; the reflection in the water; the fading light all around and the ambiance that rises to surround me. Whether or not I’ve achieved that in these photos is debatable, I’ll leave that for the comments section below.
Let’s Start With the iPhone
When I actually discovered what was happening, I only had my iPhone with me. That was good enough to document the moon over Upper Rideau Lake in Westport.
Love the hues in the sky and the transition that happens from that peachy-orange to blue. Not quite there though. Looks like I’m going to have to rush back to the studio and grab my camera-camera (and that’s what I did).
Actually, I prefer the iPhone images. My Fuji offered more warmth in the green grass, but I lost some of those blues in the sky. Always interesting how different camera sensors gather light.
Feeling a bit like I missed my opportunity, I headed home. Crossing the bridge in Bedford Mills…whoa wait a minute, what a view I noticed looking to my left over Loon Lake.
Pull that car over, grab my camera and head back to the bridge. The purple in the sky just begs to be captured.
The lake water was a perfect mirror for the sky, creating this reflected image top and bottom. It almost feels like I could flip these images and you wouldn’t know which was right side up. I’m always in awe of the beauty that surrounds me in South Eastern Ontario. These colours don’t happen many other places!
note to self: ALWAYS carry your camera with you. I don’t want to miss a thing.
