It should come as no surprise to you that we live in a house that has some freakin’ old windows. Storm windows that are placed on the exterior create a double pane but realistically, they are still leak-y. A couple of times every winter, we get some really cool ice formations (because of the leaks) and if the light is hitting them just right, the backlighting creates this Lightbox affect that illuminates the ice.
Get out the macro lens and the extension tube and go to work, I tell myself.
My timing has to be impeccable: right light, just enough frost and ice, not too warm on the windows that it starts to melt but just cold enough to keep the ice particles in check. I don’t know if there is any science behind it but the art that shows up on my camera frame is fun to document.
